Tell us a little bit about your background
Hello! I’m Tabitha (pronounced “Ta-bee-ta”) but you can call me Tabs :) I am a Wedding Photographer based in Cape Town, South Africa, and I absolutely LOVE what I do!
I am a highly visual person- I have such a deep appreciation for beautiful things, both natural and manmade. When I manage to create something I consider beautiful, it makes me truly happy.
It took me quite a few years and some false starts to get me to figure out that photography could be my profession. I started studying Psychology, then Visual Art, then back to Psychology. Throw in a bunch of language courses, a year of teacher training and a variety of part-time jobs, followed by two years as a primary school Art teacher and here I am now as a full-time photographer. I have been doing this for 8 years now.
I revel in good, meaningful conversation.
I absolutely love being in nature and shooting in nature is my favourite!
I love foreign films, travel to foreign lands and ancient cities, and finding out about different cultures. I am always trying to learn new languages.
I feel very deeply and I like to believe that this reflects in my work.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I have a sweet little boy, so mornings are very much centred around getting him ready for the day. Once nanny arrives and I'm showered and dressed (Or not! There are definitely days when I work in my pajamas!) I hide out in my office and smash a good chunk of admin and editing. I try not to let myself get too distracted during that time! In the afternoon, I like to go on outdoor adventures with my son and evening is chill time!
Tell us a bit more about your creative process?
The interplay between light and dark has become my point of reference creatively. My eyes are always on the lookout for precious moments that are taking place in beautiful light. A beautiful moment is sacred just on it's own, but add in beautiful light, and you have art.
How did you get into wedding photography?
It was not long after I got my first DSLR camera, that I started falling in love with portraiture. I photographed all my friends and just about everyone I knew, and eventually one of those friends asked me to shoot their wedding! From then I was in love...
Tell us a bit about your style?
I am a big lover of storytelling and love to capture moments and emotions in a natural and unscripted way. Beautiful light is my muse, and influences every photographic choice I make.
How has your work evolved since you began?
Like many photographers that started out when I did, my photographs went from overly saturated, to vintage yellow, to bright and airy and then to a more moody film-look. I am now at the point where I try to stop being too influenced by the trends, and just do what comes naturally to me as a creative.
What is your favourite part of your job?
Gosh there are so many things I love! I suppose if I have to choose one, it would be the fact that I get to tell stories in a creative way.
What do you say to couples who are shy in front of the lens?
I ensure them that I am there to take pictures in a completely natural way and if they just relax and let the day unfold, they have absolutely nothing to worry about! I also ensure them that I will guide them through the portrait session, and they don't need to fear about not knowing what to do!
How early do engaged couples need to book?
If you are getting married in a busy month like December or March, I'd recommend enquiring at least a year in advance, but for other months it can be anything from 3-12 months!
